From the recording Better
I wrote the tune ages ago but didn't have words for it till Beth and I spent time in the Jordanian wilderness.
Lyrics
Adrift above the travelers a watching wary eye
The falcon marks their progress underneath an arid sky
How far will her flight follow? How long can their hope last?
Who knows what worries wait or which regrets have staggered past?
Listen to the desert whisper
Lend your love the time to spend
Drink the windy wisdom river
Rest until your spirit mends
The crystal sand lies barren all around the granite spire
Whose twisted rusty towers rise precipitously higher
The night wind carved their features; the ancients carved their signs
The travelers carve their straining path with every ridge they climb
Listen to the desert whisper
Lend your love the time to spend
Drink the windy wisdom river
Rest until your spirit mends
The falcon watched their worry wane, regret release its grip
They purchased holy emptiness, let self-possession slip
Replaced their hackworn habits with giving grace instead
And joined the dry bones dancing, dreaming life among the dead
Listen to the desert whisper
Lend your love the time to spend
Drink the windy wisdom river
Rest until your spirit mends
