Lay Bare

A thought to ponder on your winter walk in the woods

Lay Bare

What can the oak hope to achieve
Gripping tight to withered leaves?
Grasping at a memory
Shades of past solemnity
Clinging to a faith it scarce believes?

Low angled rays this time of year
Barely clear the ridgetops here
Flaring ice on reindeer moss
But just beneath the reach of frost
Soil wraps the roots in blanket sleep

Lay bare your limbs to winter's brisk
Staking hope against the risk
Offer them as beds for snow
Till the creek resumes its flow
And blusterwinds of April scrub you clean
